Smoked Pottery

Born in a Bonfire: All ancient pottery was fired in bonfires or pit fires, so there is nothing new about this. This surface decoration comes from heat, flame and smoke. What I wrap round the pots and add to the sawdust makes the patterns.

Words from the Artist

“The whole process is thrilling (even though it can go wrong and I have singed my eyebrows trying to control my fire). When the embers have died down I wash the ash off, holding my breath, to see what emerges.” ~ Jo Myerscough, Potter
