These paintings are not the result of my following a style or programme, except that they attempt to be the antithesis of the glossy images found in the mass media. All my paintings begin as drawings from life and are glimpses of unposed observation. They develop onto canvas or paper, sketchily at first, and try to include multiple viewpoints. They may be abandoned as complete at any stage, but often are worked up in layers over a period of months or longer with surfaces that may have heavy impasto or multiple glazes in a variety of media, some even subjected to having the surface worked over with an electrical sander.
